Speaking and Listening
Students are working on:
- Listening and understanding a simple message in French
- Communicating a simple message related to the themes practiced in class
- Participating in authentic conversations with their peers and responding to questions to express their opinions, ideas, needs and emotions
Reading and Viewing
Students are working on:
- Choosing books independently which are appropriate for their stage of learning
- Reading with accuracy
- Using reading strategies such as looking at the pictures or sounds to solve unknown words
- Fixing mistakes when reading does not make sense
- Increasing the number of sight words which are instantly recognized
- Answering questions about a text and including some details
- Showing understanding of what has been read through drawing or writing
- Making connections to other books
- Expressing opinions about the text using details to support their opinion
- Independently reading texts at an appropriate level
Writing and Representing
Students are working on:
- Using the writing process with help from the teacher
- Generally staying on topic
- Beginning to add some supporting details
- Writing in a sequence that makes sense and has a beginning
- Attempting an ending
- Attempting some descriptive words
- Using simple sentences (some may be run-on or incomplete)
- Using spaces between words
- Using some capital letters correctly
- Using some end of sentence punctuation
- Spelling some new words by sounding them out
- Spelling some “no excuses” words correctly
- Using classroom supports (word wall, writing office, dictionary) to help them spell correctly
Mathematics
Students are working on:
- Recognizing, naming, representing, and writing numbers 1-100
- Counting forward and backwards to and from 100 (or from any number up to 50)
- Skip counting by 2, 10 forward and backward
- Identify even and odd numbers
- Representing the meaning of place value for numbers up to 20
- Comparing and ordering numbers up to 20
- Begin to apply mental math strategies such as partners to 10 and 20, doubles facts, one more/one less, two more/two less up to 18
You and Your World
Students are able to:
- Understand the importance of having a healthy lifestyle
- Understand appropriate social interactions
- Tell about how people change as they grow
- Water Cycle
